In Me Ye Might Have Peace

“These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world.” (John 16:33)

Jesus spoke these words to ensure that we would have peace in His gospel message. He brought us peace, the tranquility of soul that can only come by accepting Christ as your Lord and Savior. It is a much needed peace for as the Lord tells us, “In the world ye shall have tribulation”.

But we are not to worry. Although the world offers up distresses and tribulations, Christ inside of us calms our spirit. We garner confidence and strength through Him to fight and survive this world of turmoil.

“We are said to overcome the world, but we overcome it as soldiers, fighting under Christ, who is the Captain of our salvation, and his victory is our victory” (Matthew Poole).

To be of good cheer is just as much about courage as it is a positive attitude. Jesus wants us to have both. He assures us all that He has conquered the world. His victory over the world includes all evils, pleasures, temptations and trials. The world has no power or control over the Christian. Our victory is dovetailed to His victory and is interwoven together in accordance to our faith. All things rest upon our faith in Christ.

“Confirming the souls of the disciples, and exhorting them to continue in the faith, and that we must through much tribulation enter into the kingdom of God.” (Acts 14:22).

Just as Jesus slept on the boat during a raging sea and fierce storm we are to remain just as calm as we walk through the fierce storm that life offers us. We are to walk through life with courage and good cheer, realizing the battle has been won because Jesus has overcome the world.

“Be strong and of a good courage, fear not, nor be afraid of them: for the Lord thy God, he it is that doth go with thee; he will not fail thee, nor forsake thee.” (Deuteronomy 31:6).
