And Worshipped and Served the Creature more than the Creator

“Who changed the truth of God into a lie, and worshipped and served the creature more than the Creator, who is blessed for ever. Amen.” Romans 1:25

Let’s establish a couple of things. First off, God is a constant. He does not vary or alter. It is one of the reasons why He is called the rock.

“Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning” James 1:17.

“Wherein God, willing more abundantly to shew unto the heirs of promise the immutability of his counsel, confirmed it by an oath” (Hebrews 6:17).

“For I am the Lord, I change not; therefore ye sons of Jacob are not consumed” (Malachi 3:6).

god truthGod is the truth

“He is the Rock, his work is perfect: for all his ways are judgment: a God of truth and without iniquity, just and right is he” (Deuteronomy 32:4).

“For the word of the Lord is right; and all his works are done in truth” (Psalms 33:4).

“Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me” (John 14:6).

God can not lie.

“In hope of eternal life, which God, that cannot lie, promised before the world began” (Titus 1:2).

“That by two immutable things, in which it was impossible for God to lie, we might have a strong consolation, who have fled for refuge to lay hold upon the hope set before us” (Hebrews 6:18).

“Who changed the truth of God into a lie,” is a reference to people who intentionally and knowingly traded God for their lusts. These people didn’t change God, they exchanged God for their sins. These people knowingly gave up God so they could indulge in lusts and sin. The first sin in which the chapter of Romans deals with is homosexuality.

“for even their women did change the natural use into that which is against nature: And likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust one toward another; men with men working that which is unseemly, and receiving in themselves that recompence of their error which was meet” (Romans 1:27-28).

“….into a lie”. The lie is more than a falsehood. The lie is a conscious act, a decision of impiousness. The lie is a choice, choosing perversion over God. It is no accident or mistake, this lie is premeditated, calculated and carried out in direct opposition to the will and way of God.

Adam Clarke points out that idols are called lies in many places of the Bible. One of many examples given is from Isaiah.

“He feedeth on ashes: a deceived heart hath turned him aside, that he cannot deliver his soul, nor say, Is there not a lie in my right hand?” (Isaiah 44:20).

The sum of all lusts becomes the creature. The creature, the idol, the lies are all in one the same thing. Unleashed passion, void of truth seeking to pleasure itself. Me becomes the focus with shameful pride as the result. Anything in opposition of God is rebellion. Anything in opposition to God is a lie. Anything in opposition to God is self centered.

“and worshipped and served the creature more than the Creator

“or “above him” or “against him”, in opposition to him, or “besides him”, others along with him; or neglecting him, and not worshipping him at all; which is aggravated in that what they worshipped was a creature, either of their own, or of God’s making, and whom they neglected was the Creator of them:” John Gills

The creature is the lust of the sinner. That is who they serve. It can not be stressed enough-The sinner becomes the servant to the creature of unbridled lust. The lie is putting that creature as the priority, intentionally serving it and denying the truth which is God. There is no hope for this sinner because God, “gave them up to uncleanness through the lusts of their own hearts, to dishonour their own bodies between themselves” (Romans 1:24).

The only way out for the sinner is for them to return to God, to change back to the truth. This is by definition repentance. This door is always open, this path is always clear but the sinner must make a conscious decision and effort to do it.
