For The Wages Of Sin Is Death

For The Wages Of Sin Is Death

“For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.” (Romans 6:23)

Why is that? Why does someone have to die for sins committed? First we must remember that we are not our own.

“Behold, all souls are mine; as the soul of the father, so also the soul of the son is mine: the soul that sinneth, it shall die.” (Ezekiel 18:4)

“What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own?” (1 Corinthians 6:19)

God

We are a possession of God. We are His children. God is in control, the rule maker and judge. In short, what He says, goes! God said that the “soul that sinneth it shall die”. But also notice what the Apostle said, “the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.”

“A man may Merit hell, but he cannot Merit heaven. The apostle does not say that the wages of righteousness is eternal life: no, but that this eternal life, even to the righteous, is, the gracious Gift of God.” (Adam Clarke)

Death is as due to a sinner when he hath sinned as wages are to a servant when he hath done his work. This is true of every sin….Sinners merit hell, but saints do not merit heaven. There is no proportion between the glory of heaven and our obedience we must thank God, and not ourselves, if ever we get to heaven. And this gift is through Jesus Christ our Lord. It is Christ that purchased it, prepared it, prepares us for it, preserves us to it he is the Alpha and Omega, All in all in our salvation.” (Matthew Henry)

God said, “The soul that sinneth, it shall die. But he also went on to say, “Have I any pleasure at all that the wicked should die? saith the Lord God: and not that he should return from his ways, and live?” (Ezekiel 18:20-23).

There in is the key in the last sentence from the Lord. Although the soul that sinneth must die, God doesn’t want anyone to perish! He wants every sinner to turn or rather return back to Him and live!

“Herein is love, not that we loved God, but that he loved us, and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins.” (1 John 4:10)

When we accept Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior He becomes our substitute. His death now is accounted for ours. He takes on all of our sins and dies for us.

“For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God; Being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus: Whom God hath set forth to be a propitiation through faith in his blood, to declare his righteousness for the remission of sins that are past, through the forbearance of God; To declare, I say, at this time his righteousness: that he might be just, and the justifier of him which believeth in Jesus.” (Romans 3:23-26).

Death for sin, any sin is a mandate of God. Now it should be clear why the devil works so hard to get each of us to sin. The devil wants all of us to perish. Ever since the fall of Adam and Eve and sin entered the skin has the devil been working on man, attempting to get him to sin.

God wants to keep each of us alive! The solution to the problem is Jesus. Christ is our propitiation, our atonement for sin and is a gift from God. If we accept Jesus Christ as our savior then we are saved. If not then we are damned to eternal Hell.
