“Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who hath blessed us with all spiritual blessings in heavenly places in Christ” (Ephesians 1:3)
God has blessed us, each and every one of us. He has blessed us with “spiritual blessings”, enumerable, powerful and eternal spiritual blessings. “The eyes of your understanding being enlightened” (Ephesians 1:18) we have been given, “the spirit of wisdom and revelation” (Ephesians 1:17) and, “filled with the knowledge of his will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding” (Colossians 1:9).
Spiritual blessings bear fruit which include love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness and temperance (Galatians 5:22-23).
Spiritual understanding or spiritual discernment is the Holy Spirit working within that guides, enlightens and educates each child of God. The Spirit makes intercessions for us and, “beareth witness with our spirit” (Romans 8:16).This discernment makes known God’s will to us. We walk in God’s light because we are able to discern light from darkness.
“But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned.” (1 Corinthians 2:14).
The natural man does not believe in God. He has not accepted Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior and has not received the blessing and indwelling of the Holy Spirit. The natural man cannot comprehend or understand the spirit filled man of God.
“And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not.” (John 1:5)
“They are of the world: therefore speak they of the world, and the world heareth them. We are of God: he that knoweth God heareth us; he that is not of God heareth not us. Hereby know we the spirit of truth, and the spirit of error.” (1 John 4:5-6).
“It is not difficult to distinguish, even among professed Christians and Christian teachers, those who are heavenly in their conversation from those who are influenced solely by the spirit of the world. “Out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaketh,” and the general turn of a man‘s conversation will show what “spirit is within him.” (Albert Barnes).
We live in two distinct worlds. The natural world and the spirit world. The natural man lives in the natural world. The Holy Ghost filled man lives in the spirit. The Spirit lends discernment and comfort while the natural world offers tribulation and confusion. Jesus said, “In the world ye shall have tribulation”.
But the child of God is not of this world but of the Spirit, the Holy Spirit the Spirit of Truth or what Jesus called the “Comforter” (John 14:26). Walk in the Spirit and find truth, comfort and discernment.
