“For we through the Spirit wait for the hope of righteousness by faith. For in Jesus Christ neither circumcision availeth any thing, nor uncircumcision; but faith which worketh by love.” (Galatians 5:5-6)
It is the Holy Spirit that gives our spirit knowledge and belief and enables us to hope for the righteousness to come. We cannot do this alone. When we accept Jesus Christ as our Savior and become filled with the Holy Spirit then the, “Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God” (Romans 8:16).
The Spirit gives us the ability to wait and be patient for the “hope of righteousness by faith”. The Holy Spirit empowers and strengthens our resolve. Our hope is for righteousness. We are hoping to be cleansed. We are hoping to be made pure. We are hoping to become acceptable and presentable to God. We understand that this will happen through faith in Christ but it is the Holy Spirt that strengthens that faith and makes us capable to have the endurance and patience to withstand the fiery darts of this world.
The Holy Spirit is our comforter, He is our teacher. He is the truth and brings, “all things to your rememberance” (John 14:26). The Holy Spirit dwells within us, mingles with our spirit and guides us towards Christ. The Holy Spirit endorses and supports our faith and gives us reason to press onward towards Jesus, towards righteousness. The Holy Spirit shows us how to stay in the straight and narrow way that leads to life and how to avoid missteps off the path.
The Holy Spirit and our spirit become unified as one. This was Jesus Christs purpose and great wish and desire for all of man. Jesus expressed this to God when His hour to be glorified had finally come.
“Neither pray I for these alone, but for them also which shall believe on me through their word; That they all may be one; as thou, Father, art in me, and I in thee, that they also may be one in us: that the world may believe that thou hast sent me” (John 17:20-21).
This world is of the devil. He tempts and influences us to sin, stumble and fall. We are in a war of righteousness versus unrighteousness. We are behind enemy lines. The Holy Spirit has been sent by Christ not only for our aid and comfort but for our confidence and knowledge in the victory to come. The victory rests solely on our faith. We must believe! Faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen (Hebrews 1:1).
“Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered.” (Romans 8:26)
“For in Jesus Christ neither circumcision availeth any thing, nor uncircumcision”. No rite, ritual, works or deed will make available Jesus Christ or His righteousness that will save us.
“but faith which worketh by love.” Everything rests on our faith. While in our physical bodies we live behind spiritual enemy lines. The world is an unrighteous place. The Holy Spirit has been sent by Christ to fill us and ensure us of the hope and promise to come, of the righteousness ahead.
But notice it says that faith, “worketh” by love. The original Greek word used for worketh was, “energeo”. It’s where we get the word energy from. So our faith is energized by our love. It is energized by our love for God. It is energized by our love for Jesus. It is energized by our love for righteousness.
The Holy Spirit was sent to us to act as a comforter, teacher and motivator. The world and the evil in it are just too big and too strong for anyone to try to do it on their own.
Our love for Jesus Christ energizes us and helps move us forward towards the righteousness to come.
The Holy Spirit is our comforter. Jesus Christ is our hope, He is the righteousness to come.
