“But there is a spirit in man: and the inspiration of the Almighty giveth them understanding” (Job 32:8).
Man is a three part entity of body, soul and spirit. God is a three part entity of Father, Son and Holy Ghost. When man obeys the commands of God (See Acts 5:32), the Holy Ghost is given to him and beareth witness with man’s spirit (See Romans 8:16). And as the 1599 Geneva Bible commentary so accurately states the Holy Ghost is, “A special gift of God that man hath understanding, and cometh neither of nature nor by age”.
The Holy Ghost mingles with our spirit. It enlightens, educates and guides us. “We live, and move, and have our being” (Acts 17:28) when our spirit is in tune and in sync with the Holy Spirit. Scriptures come alive when the Holy Ghost quickens us. The Bible stops being a book of rules and laws or some philosophy. We then understand that true wisdom, knowledge and understanding does not come, “of nature nor by age”.
When we receive the Holy Ghost the word becomes inspired and quickens us. We then are able to receive revelation. As John Calvin puts it, “The word is the instrument by which the illumination of the Spirit is dispensed”.
“The law of the Lord kills its readers when it is dissevered from the grace of Christ, and only sounds in the ear without touching the heart. But if it is effectually impressed on the heart by the Spirit; if it exhibits Christ, it is the word of life converting the soul, and making wise the simple…We have no great certainty of the word itself, until it be confirmed by the testimony of the Spirit. For the Lord has so knit together the certainty of his word and his Spirit, that our minds are duly imbued with reverence for the word when the Spirit shining upon it enables us there to behold the face of God; and, on the other hand, we embrace the Spirit with no danger of delusion when we recognise him in his image, that is, in his word” (Institutes of the Christian Religion by John Calvin).
It is by the Spirit that the word is confirmed making wise the simple and converting the soul.
The “inspiration of the Almighty” or the Holy Ghost is the same spirit that God “breathed” into man at his creation. “And the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground, and “breathed” into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul” (Genesis 2:7).
But sin caused a separation between God and man, His Spirit and ours.
“When man fell from God, the Spirit of God was grieved, and departed from him; but was restored, as the enlightener and corrector, in virtue of the purposed incarnation and atonement of our Lord Jesus” (Adam Clarke).
Sin separated man from the Godhead for He is perfect, righteous and without spot. So His essence in form of the Son came to atone for man’s fall. It was only by Jesus Christ, the Wonderful, Counsellor and Comforter that the union between man’s spirit and the Holy Ghost could be restored.
Jesus Christ said, “If ye love me, keep my commandments. And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever; Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you. I will not leave you comfortless: I will come to you” (John 14:15-18).
The Comforter and the Spirit of Truth is that spirit that mingles with our Spirit.
