Sons of God

“Behold, what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us, that we should be called the sons of God: therefore the world knoweth us not, because it knew him not.”

What a powerful verse! Without a doubt this is one of the strongest most profound statements in all of the Bible. It declares God’s love for us and our lineage to Him. We are sons of God! What could be more exciting and powerful than that!

The verse starts off with “Behold”. This is designating some marvelous event or happening. It is grabbing our attentions and focusing it on this great miracle.

“Manner of love”, the word manner is multifaceted. First it designates quality or level of love. Which in this case is great because it is due to God’s love that we are now His children! But manner also refers to nation or tribe. In this scenario we are of the tribe or family of the most High God!

The love spoken of here is of the deepest and greatest type of love. It is love rooted and seated in God with a manifesting outreach to other people. Love God in this context then you will love God’s children as well.

All of this has been “bestowed upon us”. We didn’t earn it. We didn’t do a certain amount of good or good deeds to qualify for it. God through his love and mercy bestowed this great honor on us via His son Jesus Christ.

We are sons of God! Albert Barnes put all of this in perspective when he said, “A prince could manifest no higher love for a wandering, ragged, vicious orphan boy, found in the streets, than by adopting him into his own family, and admitting him to the same privileges and honors as his own sons; and yet this would be a trifle compared with the honor which God has bestowed on us.”

“Therefore the world knoweth us not, because it knew him not.” As sons of God we are strangers in a strange land. The world is home to the devil and of all worldly, carnal things. We might not always easily recognize the devil and things of this world but the devil knows exactly who each of the sons of God are. The devil is full of hatred and envy for God’s chosen. But God is greater than the devil.

“Ye are of God, little children, and have overcome them: because greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world. They are of the world: therefore speak they of the world, and the world heareth them. We are of God: he that knoweth God heareth us; he that is not of God heareth not us. Hereby know we the spirit of truth, and the spirit of error.” (1 John 4:4-6)

Behold! What manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us! God loves His own so much that we have been adopted into His family! Rejoice and marvel in this great wonder!
