“Search me, O God, and know my heart: try me, and know my thoughts: And see if there be any wicked way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.” (Psalm 139:23-24).
This is the ultimate repentant attitude. To stand in the presence of God and ask Him to, “Search me”. Most people spend their time trying to avoid God all together. But here the Psalmist is requesting God into his way and life and to search out his entire being.
How many of us are willing to volunteer our heart, our spirit to God for examination? Most of all knowing that we are imperfect and that iniquity will be found. This is a display of total trust in our Lord. To turn our self over to Him, regardless of what He will find and regardless of the consequence.
“Try me”, Take this sinful soul and thoroughly test and reprove it. Are we willing to go through such an experience knowing what will be found? Are we willing to go through such an experience to discover what was unknown, lurking and working within our soul?
“Lead me in the way everlasting”. Tested, proved and then cleansed, we then ask to the way everlasting. From forever to forever, proceeding forward as a child of God.
We go to the doctor for annual check-ups for our bodies. We get examined to see if there is any underlying problems that need be addressed and corrected. We need to go to God to have our inner man examined as well. Fear and guilt will stop us. But we need to, “Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding” (Proverbs 3:5).
Being able to go to God and ask him to “Search me” is acknowledging Him as the Lord and as the supreme God. It is submitting to Him and recognizing His authority. First is the trial and fire then comes the cleansing through repentance unto salvation.
Search Me O God
