The Bible is replete with verses, psalms and messages about how the righteous gain favor with God and prosper the nation.
“When the righteous are in authority, the people rejoice: but when the wicked beareth rule, the people mourn.” (Proverbs 29:2)
“Righteousness exalteth a nation: but sin is a reproach to any people.” (Proverbs 14:34)
“When it goeth well with the righteous, the city rejoiceth: and when the wicked perish, there is shouting. By the blessing of the upright the city is exalted: but it is overthrown by the mouth of the wicked” (Proverbs 11:10-11)
“Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord; and the people whom he hath chosen for his own inheritance.” (Psalm 33:12)
“Happy is that people, that is in such a case: yea, happy is that people, whose God is the Lord.” (Psalm 144:15)
A righteous people create a righteous nation and things go well. Righteousness is a characteristic and attribute of God. It is imbued and embodied unto His people through Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior. When a nation is in Christ and Christ is in that nation then, “wisdom and knowledge shall be the stability of thy times, and strength of salvation: the fear of the Lord is his treasure.” (Isaiah 33:6).
America is presently the farthest from the Lord than it has ever been. We have a president and a ruling political party that believe the office of the presidency should be used for their select social agendas and ideological beliefs in fundamentally transforming America (and the world) into a Sodom and Gomorrah. Righteousness like Elvis has left the building.
“If that nation, against whom I have pronounced, turn from their evil, I will repent of the evil that I thought to do unto them.” (Jeremiah 18:8)
God always offers a way out. God loves each and every one of us and wants each to turn from their ways and live!
“Cast away from you all your transgressions, whereby ye have transgressed; and make you a new heart and a new spirit: for why will ye die, O house of Israel? For I have no pleasure in the death of him that dieth, saith the Lord God: wherefore turn yourselves, and live ye.” (Ezekiel 18:31-32)
God wants us to turn and live! This should be the clarion call for the United States of America. God shone his face on us once and we prospered like no other nation. He will again but we must return back to Him and righteousness! Righteousness or “right-ness” is the salvation from the Lord waiting on the USA.
Psalm 67 is a brief psalm. But within this short song is the very sentiment of the United States of America. It should be an inspiration to all to resurrect this country back to its former greatness. We may elect people to govern this country but it is only through God and His blessings that effective, prosperous and righteous change can occur.
“God be merciful unto us, and bless us; and cause his face to shine upon us; Selah. That thy way may be known upon earth, thy saving health among all nations. Let the people praise thee, O God; let all the people praise thee. O let the nations be glad and sing for joy: for thou shalt judge the people righteously, and govern the nations upon earth. Selah. Let the people praise thee, O God; let all the people praise thee. Then shall the earth yield her increase; and God, even our own God, shall bless us. God shall bless us; and all the ends of the earth shall fear him.” (Psalm 67:1-7)
President George Washington’s Farewell Address of 1796 best typifies and exemplifies the need for God and righteousness not only in our nation but in our government. The Christian religion is not a different set of governing rules but rather pillars to which truth sits and guide post to restrict iniquity and sin. This is unlike other religions which are in fact governments in of themselves. Christianity serves and aids the public and the republic that is America.
“Of all the dispositions and habits which lead to political prosperity, religion and morality are indispensable supports. In vain would that man claim the tribute of patriotism, who should labor to subvert these great pillars of human happiness, these firmest props of the duties of men and citizens. The mere politician, equally with the pious man, ought to respect and to cherish them. A volume could not trace all their connections with private and public felicity. Let it simply be asked: Where is the security for property, for reputation, for life, if the sense of religious obligation desert the oaths which are the instruments of investigation in courts of justice? And let us with caution indulge the supposition that morality can be maintained without religion. Whatever may be conceded to the influence of refined education on minds of peculiar structure, reason and experience both forbid us to expect that national morality can prevail in exclusion of religious principle.” (President George Washington)
Let us return to righteousness and God. Let us return America’s favor in God’s eyes and once again restore America to its former greatness.
