“Mercy and truth are met together; righteousness and peace have kissed each other.” (Psalm 85:10)
How sweet! How poetic! How True! But this verse from Psalm 85 also shows what may first be thought of as a contradiction. Mercy and truth together are understandable but righteousness and peace? How can these two be associated with each other? How can righteousness which is the rightness of God create peace when compared to sinful man?
“Shew us thy mercy, O Lord, and grant us thy salvation. I will hear what God the Lord will speak: for he will speak peace unto his people, and to his saints: but let them not turn again to folly. Surely his salvation is nigh them that fear him; that glory may dwell in our land” (Psalm 85:7-9)
It all begins with Mercy. If God did not have mercy on man then man would not exist. We are born of sin and born into sin.
“Against thee, thee only, have I sinned, and done this evil in thy sight: that thou mightest be justified when thou speakest, and be clear when thou judgest. Behold, I was shapen in iniquity; and in sin did my mother conceive me” (Psalm 51:4-5).
If it was not for God’s mercy, His forgiveness and forbearance of our sin and iniquities then all of man would be destroyed. This was first demonstrated by God and the flood. Mankind was destroyed due to his sin and iniquity. Noah, who was to continue mankind, was saved due to God’s mercy.
“Righteousness shall go before him; and shall set us in the way of his steps” (Psalm 85:13).
This is “the way” for us to follow. The path of righteousness God has set before us. The children of God who respond to Jesus Christ and His gospel call will search out and walk this path that is before him. To deviate is sin for it would also be intentional.
“Woe unto him that striveth with his Maker! Let the potsherd strive with the potsherds of the earth. Shall the clay say to him that fashioneth it, What makest thou? or thy work, He hath no hands?” (Isaiah 45:9)
God’s mercy is displayed to the man who responds to the truth. Man’s response and actions to God’s truth is an act of righteousness. Peace, true peace can only be found in righteousness for true righteousness and peace can only be found in Jesus Christ our Lord and Savior.
“Drop down, ye heavens, from above, and let the skies pour down righteousness: let the earth open, and let them bring forth salvation, and let righteousness spring up together; I the Lord have created it” (Psalm 45:7-8).
Mercy, truth, righteousness and peace all come from God. These things can only be found in Jesus Christ, not man. When man is in Christ and Christ is in man then and only then can he walk in righteousness and truth.
Yea, the Lord shall give that which is good when we are found in Christ.
