Man has a propensity towards fear. He can be afraid to try something new. The unknown is frightening to him. Even the dark can be a cause for great fear. Probably man’s greatest fear is of being alone.
But all of these fears come directly from the devil. “For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.” (1 Timothy 1:7)
Don’t misconstrue what is being said here. We are not speaking about the kind of fear that is built in for self-survival. Standing perilously close to the edge of a cliff, being inches away from a wild bear or being held up by a robber generates a fear of fight or flight. This is natural fear and is intended to keep you alive.
The devil causes fear where there is no cause or rational reason for that fear. This fear generates anxiety, timidity and deep regrets due to inaction. There is no call for this fear especially when the Lord is just a call away.
“I called upon the Lord in distress: the Lord answered me, and set me in a large place. The Lord is on my side; I will not fear: what can man do unto me? The Lord taketh my part with them that help me: therefore shall I see my desire upon them that hate me. It is better to trust in the Lord than to put confidence in man. It is better to trust in the Lord than to put confidence in princes.” (Psalm 118:5-9).
God reminded Joshua, “Have not I commanded thee? Be strong and of a good courage; be not afraid, neither be thou dismayed: for the Lord thy God is with thee whithersoever thou goest.” (Joshua 1:9).
This applies to us all. God is with us no matter where we go or what situation we may find our self in. God is there. “For I the Lord thy God will hold thy right hand, saying unto thee, Fear not; I will help thee.” (Isaiah 41:13)
Do not allow fear and the devil to creep into your life. “Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.” (James 4:7)
In Franklin D. Roosevelt’s first inaugural address he said the, “Only thing we have to fear is fear itself”. How true. Just realize that it is the devil behind the fear, the lie. He is doing everything in his power to make that fear look bigger and stronger than what it really is.
Always remember, “God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.” (Psalm 46:1)
