“This is my commandment, That ye love one another, as I have loved you.” (John 15:12)
This is yet another very simple and straightforward commandment from Jesus Christ. It is also probably the most powerful commandment he ever gave. It is one we all need to take to heart and to put into practice.
But notice what Jesus did not say. He did not say, “This is my commandment, That ye love one another”. This would throw an entirely different context over the commandment. It would restrict love to the human element and that is not the love in which Jesus speaks of. It is why He added the qualifier, “as I have loved you.”
The love that Christ speaks of is a love that first has God as its object. We must love God with all of our heart, mind, body, soul and strength. We must love God as the father, as His little children. The love for other people, God’s children is an extension of that love we have for God. It is our love for God made manifest onto others. With this Godly type love we don’t have to know the other person or even like the other person. There need be any emotional attachment to the other person. But we do have God’s love within us being conveyed towards all other people. We are God’s children and we are here to help God’s children in the name of God and for His sake.
God’s love transcends man’s idea of an emotional involvement and attachment to someone. God’s love within man being outwardly displayed towards other people is righteousness.
God’s love “suffereth long, and is kind; love envieth not; love vaunteth not itself, is not puffed up, Doth not behave itself unseemly, seeketh not her own, is not easily provoked, thinketh no evil; Rejoiceth not in iniquity, but rejoiceth in the truth; Beareth all things, believeth all things, hopeth all things, endureth all things.” (1 Corinthians 13:4-7)
God’s love made manifest from one person to another fulfills all of God’s laws. It is righteousness on display. The effect is the advancement of the human element in God’s way. This can be nothing but righteousness.
