“And he is before all things, and by him all things consist” (Colossians 1:17)
This short verse is one of the most profound statements ever made. Its brevity and simplicity generally causes people to overlook it and leave it unexplored. But this Bible verse, practically a morpheme, is actually bigger than any big bang theorist could possible dream of.
What is it saying? In a short and rather rough explanation, Jesus is before anything and everything and it is by Him that all things are made.
“And he (Jesus) is before all things”. Notice the tense of “is”. It is not past tense. It is not “He was before all things”. “Is”, is the present tense of “to be”. Jesus is and will be before all things.
But “is” is a form of “be” or “to be” also means to exist. Jesus is extant before all things, or in advance of all things. So Jesus is present, he is existent in advance of everything.
“All things”, everything, known and unknown, seen and unseen, righteous and unrighteous, principalities and powers-Jesus existed before and in advance of all things.
Nothing was before Jesus. He is unoriginated, a concept too great for human comprehension. This is why we are not to lean on our own understanding for we cannot (in our present condition) grasp the breadth, and length, and depth, and height of it all.
“O the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God! how unsearchable are his judgments, and his ways past finding out! For who hath known the mind of the Lord? or who hath been his counsellor? Or who hath first given to him, and it shall be recompensed unto him again? For of him, and through him, and to him, are all things: to whom be glory for ever. Amen” (Romans 11:33-36).
“By him all things consist”. It is by Jesus Christ that all things consist or are composed of. But this reference is much more than material composition, but rather the force that binds all things together. Without the hand of God to bind and to let, nothing would be. Nothing would consist in any material or substantive form.
“In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth. And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters” (Genesis 1:1-2).
Jesus first created the elements and then molded and composed the earth and heaven. Jesus originated the base elements of all things and then formed, fashioned and created the entities as we know them today. In like fashion He created man.
“And the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul” (Genesis 2:7).
God or Elohym which is God expressed in His three part divinity grabbed the base elements of the earth then formed and composed man into the image and likeness of himself.
“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The same was in the beginning with God. All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made” (John 1:1-3).
In the, “Which came first the chicken or the egg” debate, we now know it was the chicken. It is Jesus that was before all things, created the elements of all things then formed all things to His liking.
“Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and to day, and for ever” (Hebrews 13:8).
