This has been an interesting journey. What started out as a commentary on two separate passages from Proverbs became an interesting outpouring about one of them. Hell and destruction probably is not anyone’s most ideal topic. But this is something we all need to read, comprehend and act upon.
Hell and destruction
“Hell and destruction are never full; so the eyes of man are never satisfied” (Proverbs 27:20).
Hell and destruction are translated from the Hebrew, “Sheol and Abaddown”. These are names for Hades and the abysmal state of the spirit in the afterlife while residing there. This is the place of the dead, for the dead, of ruination and misery, a place of perpetual loss.
As bottomless and infinite as Hell and destruction are, so are the lusting and covetous eyes of man. It is these eyes, this depraved mental and spiritual condition of man possessing sin of unfathomable depths that reserves him his spot in Hell.
The eyes of man are the eyes of Adam, the first man, the fallen man. They are of the man in his unrepented and unregenerated state. He is corrupt and wicked with every imagination and thought nothing but evil all of the time.
Death encourages lust and desire. Hell, like the eyes of man is never full or satisfied. Hell has an insatiable appetite for man. It is an empty abyss that is impossible to fill. The end of death and Hell comes only when death and Hell are cast into the lake of fire.
The lust of the flesh and the lust of the eyes are not of God. But Hell and destruction are before the Lord as well as the hearts and desires of men.
“Whither shall I go from thy spirit? or whither shall I flee from thy presence? If I ascend up into heaven, thou art there: if I make my bed in hell, behold, thou art there” (Psalm 139:7-8).
We are always in the presence of the Lord. How do we escape death and Hell?
“Behold, I shew you a mystery; We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed, In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trump: for the trumpet shall sound, and the dead shall be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed. For this corruptible must put on incorruption, and this mortal must put on immortality. So when this corruptible shall have put on incorruption, and this mortal shall have put on immortality, then shall be brought to pass the saying that is written, Death is swallowed up in victory. O death, where is thy sting? O grave, where is thy victory? The sting of death is sin; and the strength of sin is the law. But thanks be to God, which giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. Therefore, my beloved brethren, be ye stedfast, unmoveable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, forasmuch as ye know that your labour is not in vain in the Lord” (1 Corinthians 15:51-58).
Hell sends death riding on the back of lust and lasciviousness. To avoid Hell and destruction man must escape the sin within his skin. The spirit of man is at war with the body of man. If the spirit yields to the body, the man becomes a hedonistic monster. He will be driven by and to his own pleasures here on earth, reserved for death and destruction after this life.
The man that yields to the spirit quells the body in a never ending effort to be consistent with God and truth. It is a battle present and fought in this life.
What man yields to in this life is what he is. Lust and unfettered desire are the kisses from hell and destruction. Truth, righteousness and love are the embrace of God.
We do not die then become. What we have committed to now in our present state is what we will be. The only change is that we shed our physical body and its attributes and character. No longer affected by the tactile and sensuality of flesh, the true nature of man comes forth in spirit alone.
The man of sin reserved for Hell and destruction is like a black hole. He consumes, takes and destroys. He is the center of his own universe and anything passing by that catches his eye he takes.
The man of God, of truth, righteousness and love is the exact opposite. He gives, uplifts and edifies everything within his realm. He is an output of light giving freely to all that pass by.
Tranquility and peace emanate from the spirit man of God. Hell and destruction from the spirit man of lust and desire.
Light and dark, Heaven and Hell, peace and destruction, man and spirit. The choice and decision of what we are is made now. There is no rethinking or changing later. Heaven and Hell are permanent residences.
We can be totally blind to the truth. Not knowing and unaware. We can avert our attentions away from it and claim that truth does not exist; the truth of Heaven, Hell and destruction. We can admit the truth but care less for them both while we continue living in today as we please. Or we can admit and accept the reality of truth and embrace it with all our heart, mind, body and soul. What we accept we become. Non-acceptance is the same as denial. If we deny the truth then we accept all the things of a lie and unrighteousness.
“Live in Christ, live in Christ, and the flesh need not fear death.” (John Knox)
“I have pain; but I have peace, I have peace.” (Richard Baxter)
“You have been used to take notice of the sayings of dying men. This is mine: that a life spent in the service of God, and communion with Him, is the most comfortable and pleasant life that anyone can live in this world.” (Matthew Henry)
“And that, knowing the time, that now it is high time to awake out of sleep: for now is our salvation nearer than when we believed. The night is far spent, the day is at hand: let us therefore cast off the works of darkness, and let us put on the armour of light. Let us walk honestly, as in the day; not in rioting and drunkenness, not in chambering and wantonness, not in strife and envying. But put ye on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make not provision for the flesh, to fulfil the lusts thereof” (Romans 13:11-14).
“There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit. For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death” (Romans 8:1-2).
“And you hath he quickened, who were dead in trespasses and sins; Wherein in time past ye walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience: Among whom also we all had our conversation in times past in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind; and were by nature the children of wrath, even as others.
But God, who is rich in mercy, for his great love wherewith he loved us, Even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us together with Christ, (by grace ye are saved;) And hath raised us up together, and made us sit together in heavenly places in Christ Jesus: That in the ages to come he might shew the exceeding riches of his grace in his kindness toward us through Christ Jesus.
For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast. For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them” Ephesians 2:1-10)
Who are you? It matters not what you think for it does not affect what is. Who are you? Are you a child of God or the devil? Light or darkness? It matters not intent or desire, who are you? What we are will be manifest in what we do but what we do does not necessarily have anything to do with who we are.
Who are you? Now is the time to ponder, reflect, to see and realize who. There is no condemnation in those of Christ. Are you ready to let go and let God into your life? The only other choice, whether a choice is made or not is Hell and destruction so who are you?
