“For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.” (Romans 10:10).
It is with the heart, not the head that man believeth unto righteousness. The heart, the physical organ was believed to be the seat and center of all physical, emotional and spiritual life. The heart and the spirit are intertwined in that they both have love as their foundation.
“It is with the heart that man believeth, which implies more than an assent of the understanding, and takes in the consent of the will, an inward, hearty, sincere, and strong consent.” (Matthew Henry).
It is with the heart, this spiritual center that we hold true with deepest of convictions righteousness. Righteousness is a condition, a state of being. It is a condition of Right-ness in the eyes of the Lord. It is a condition intended to be an effect on other people. One that brings everyone closer to God and His ways.
Righteousness is too often confused with self –righteousness which is a condition dedicated to one’s own holiness and purity. God’s righteousness is dedicated to all and is an outreach and outpouring of God’s love and the gospel message. Self –righteousness is self-contained. God’s righteousness pours out to everyone.
Because of the nature of righteousness, confession of God and His salvation will upwell forth.
“That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.” (Romans 10:9).
It all starts with the heart. When it gets changed into an instrument of God then all else will follow.
For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness
