I will guide thee with mine eye

I will guide thee with mine eye

From a wonderful Psalm of David we have God speaking directly to us. Forever straight forward and plain in speech and purpose, our Lord comforts us with instruction, intent and destination in a lost world of turmoil and confusion.

“I will instruct thee and teach thee in the way which thou shalt go: I will guide thee with mine eye” (Psalm 32:8).

God said, “I will instruct thee” or instill upon us a care and thought for the future. If we do not care or show concerns for our tomorrows then our future holds no value. We live today and consume and take. Bank deposits are for future withdrawal. If someone believes not in tomorrow, then all wealth and equity will be spent today. Principle and precept have little or no value for those living only for today for these things are our guide posts to keep us on track through life. That person that lives just for today has no tomorrow and has no life. God’s plan for us, His way is all about tomorrow on through eternity. The person who lives for only today is an only, lonely person without hope and without God.

“And teach thee” what God teaches us is the very foundation in which we stand. What God teaches us and instills in us is what the Apostle Paul is referring to when he said, “Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand” (Ephesians 6:13).

The foundation of God’s instruction and teachings is the “substance” in which the evangelists states, “Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen” (Hebrews 11:1).

What God instructs us in and teaches us with and instills within our very spirit is, “the brightness of his glory, and the express image of his person”, the very foundation that upholds, “all things by the word of his power”, the very foundation of Jesus Christ.

“and teach thee in the way which thou shalt go”

“These are by many thought to be the words of the Lord, who gives to a man an understanding of spiritual things; he instructs by his providence, and even by afflictive dispensations of providence; and by his word, which is written for the learning of men, and is profitable for doctrine and instruction in righteousness, and by the ministers of it, who are therefore called instructors in Christ” (John Gills).

“The Way” is both an action and a destination. God will show us where we are going. He will also show us how to get there. The way, by the way, is a return trip. When we repent we return back to the graces of God and back to how we were originally created.

“I will guide thee with mine eye” the eye of the Lord is a metaphor for His Holy Spirit. “The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God” (Romans 8:16). For, “the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us” (Romans 8:26), The Spirit teaches, instructs and guides us. The Spirit of the Lord quickens our spirit and motivates us forward in Him and His way. When within our body the “light turns on” it is by God’s Holy Spirit illuminating our soul!

spirit“We have no great certainty of the word itself, until it be confirmed by the testimony of the Spirit. For the Lord has so knit together the certainty of his word and his Spirit, that our minds are duly imbued with reverence for the word when the Spirit shining upon it enables us there to behold the face of God” (John Calvin, Institutes of the Christian Religion, Book 1)

God is forever guiding His children in the way. The path is clear the instruction simple. Won’t you let go and let God work within you through Jesus Christ as your foundation and the Holy Spirit’s illumination?
