Gold. There are two popular TV shows that deal with finding and mining for gold. One is National Geographic’s, “Gold Diggers” and the other is the Discovery Channel’s, “Gold Rush”. Both programs showcase gold miners travelling the world suffering hazards and adversities in the pursuit of finding gold. Both of these programs strike at the very heart of desires in man which is to strike it rich!
King Solomon who, “Exceeded all the kings of the earth for riches and for wisdom. And all the earth sought to Solomon, to hear his wisdom, which God had put in his heart.” (1 Kings 10:23-24), I wonder what King Solomon would say about these modern day miners and their desire to strike it rich with gold?
“How much better is it to get wisdom than gold! and to get understanding rather to be chosen than silver!” Proverbs 16:16
“Happy is the man that findeth wisdom, and the man that getteth understanding. For the merchandise (gain/profit) of it is better than the merchandise of silver, and the gain thereof than fine gold.” Proverbs 3:13-14
Ultimately the wisdom and understanding Solomon speaks of all deal with our relationship and communion with Jesus Christ. The gain of Christ is greater than the gain of gold. This wisdom and understanding is not an academic process, although studying God’s word is part of it. And we are past the legal realm being freed by the “perfect law of liberty”. (James 1:25)
Wisdom and understanding is Jesus Christ
“I wisdom dwell with prudence, and find out knowledge of witty inventions. The fear of the Lord is to hate evil: pride, and arrogancy, and the evil way, and the froward mouth, do I hate. Counsel is mine, and sound wisdom: I am understanding; I have strength. By me kings reign, and princes decree justice. By me princes rule, and nobles, even all the judges of the earth. I love them that love me; and those that seek me early shall find me. Riches and honour are with me; yea, durable riches and righteousness. My fruit is better than gold, yea, than fine gold; and my revenue than choice silver.” Proverbs 8:12-19.
The real treasure is Jesus Christ our Savior
“Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal: But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal.” Matthew 6:19-21
