“Gold is nothing but dust to a dying man”.
Death brings clarity to value. Life is what we value most. But the devil distracts the living from securing life eternal. He deviates our course of life by causing us to pursue worldly gains and not Godly salvation. The devil attempted the same thing with Jesus. The devil offered Jesus all of the kingdoms and all of the power of the world if He would just worship him and his worldly possessions! (Luke 4:1-13).
But Jesus came so that we could have, “life, and that they might have it more abundantly”. (John 10:10). Life was the priority of Jesus, not silver and gold and power and fame. Those are just distractions of a world ruled by the evil one.
“Wilt thou set thine eyes upon that which is not? for riches certainly make themselves wings; they fly away as an eagle toward heaven.” (Proverbs 23:5)
“Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life…” (John 14:6)
Gold is nothing but dust to a dying man. What has to be realized is that life can end. Life can be a segment of time. Or life can be eternal, timeless, and everlasting.
Mike Cross is a famous bluegrass singer/composer. One of his songs from many years ago is called “Uncle Josh”. This song tells of a man that considers life a terminal disease.
Here are the opening lyrics to the song.
“My Uncle Josh was a barrel of laughs, he traveled a wide and a crooked path, no straight and narrow road was meant for him. Papa would say, “You old black sheep. How come you treat your life so cheap?
Josh would always answer with a grin. He said living, at its longest, is just a short trek to the grave, so you might as well enjoy what you can along the way. Cause if the Doctor said you were going to die, wouldn’t you do as you please. Well listen here brother, life’s just another terminal disease.”
(Lyrics from the song “Uncle Josh” by Mike Cross)
The devil wants us all to look at life as one big terminal disease. This creates the mind set for the living that time is short so we need to get all we can get, do all we can do and to occupy all of our time in personal pursuits of worldly gain. Worldly, tangible gain but not spiritual, supernatural gain.
Gold is nothing but dust to a dying man. Death brings clarity to the value of life. No one wants to die. God doesn’t want you to die. He wants you to live!
“For I have no pleasure in the death of him that dieth, saith the Lord God: wherefore turn yourselves, and live ye” (Ezekiel 18:32)
Turn (repent) yourselves while you are still alive. Seize the opportunity of life eternal. Accept Jesus Christ as your Savior and live! Silver and gold and power and fame have no sway over death. Worldly gain can not prevent the grave.
Understand that the goal and purpose of the devil is to “steal, and to kill, and to destroy” (John 10:10) you and your life. He does this through worldly influences and letting you think that life is nothing but a terminal disease.
God said, “I have set before you life and death, blessing and cursing: therefore choose life” (Deuteronomy 30:19).
Gold is nothing but dust to a dying man. Jesus is life, therefore choose life!
