“For the Lord is great, and greatly to be praised: he is to be feared above all gods. For all the gods of the nations are idols: but the Lord made the heavens.” (Psalm 96:4-5)
The psalmist calls God by name, “Lord” which is transliterated from “Jehovah”! Calling God by His name shows a personal relationship and reverence. Jehovah is to be praised and revered above all other gods. And now we arrive at the point of these two verses. All other “gods” are nothing more than false idols.
“For all the gods of the nations are idols”.
“Among the gods there is none like unto thee, O Lord; neither are there any works like unto thy works. All nations whom thou hast made shall come and worship before thee, O Lord; and shall glorify thy name. For thou art great, and doest wondrous things: thou art God alone.” (Psalm 86:8-10)
“Thou art God alone”- Jehovah is the only one true God. All other supposed deities are nothing more than idols. These are false gods of man’s creation.
God went into great detail about false gods and idols in his first commandment.
“I am the Lord thy God, which have brought thee out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage. Thou shalt have no other gods before me. Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth. Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them: for I the Lord thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me; And shewing mercy unto thousands of them that love me, and keep my commandments.” (Exodus 20:2-6).
Other “gods” are false gods, idols of carnal man. It is sin from a rebellious people.
“The idol gods have no existence, but our God is the author of all existences; they are mere earthly vanities, while he is not only heavenly, but made the heavens. This is mentioned as an argument for Jehovah’s universal praise. Who can be worshipped but he? Since none can rival him, let him be adored alone.” (Charles Spurgeon)
If other gods are false idols then other religions that worship these idols are false as well. It is idolatry. These other religions are an abomination to the one true God.
The Apostle Paul said, “Wherefore, my dearly beloved, flee from idolatry” (1 Corinthians 10:14).
John in his epistles said, “Little children, keep yourselves from idols. Amen” (1 John 5:21)
Paul made it clear in his letter to the Ephesians that there was, “One Lord, one faith, one baptism, One God and Father of all, who is above all, and through all, and in you all” (Ephesians 4:5-6).
Any other god other than the one true God Jehovah is a false god. It is an idol of man’s construct. Worshipping a false God is idolatry. It comes from a harden heart and a rebellious spirit.
God said, “Turn ye unto me, saith the LORD of hosts, and I will turn unto you, saith the LORD of hosts.” (Zechariah 1:3).
Turn to Jehovah and he will turn to you. “Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you. Cleanse your hands, ye sinners; and purify your hearts, ye double minded” (James 4:8).
For all the gods of the nations are idols
