The Foolishness Of Man

The Foolishness Of Man

“The foolishness of man perverteth his way: and his heart fretteth against the Lord.” (Proverbs 19:3)

Foolishness comes from the Hebrew root word, “evel” which means “one who despises wisdom”. You can’t help but look at the word, “evel” and see the word, “evil”. Truly evil is to hate the words and wisdoms of God.

The foolishness of man is the man that despises and rejects God’s wisdom. This also goes against a direct command.

Wisdom

“Get wisdom, get understanding: forget it not; neither decline from the words of my mouth. Forsake her not, and she shall preserve thee: love her, and she shall keep thee. Wisdom is the principal thing; therefore get wisdom: and with all thy getting get understanding. Exalt her, and she shall promote thee: she shall bring thee to honour, when thou dost embrace her. She shall give to thine head an ornament of grace: a crown of glory shall she deliver to thee.” (Proverbs 4:5-9).

Look what happens when the foolish man rejects wisdom; his way gets perverted. The way is better thought of as life. When we reject God our life gets overturned. It becomes a slippery slope that has us falling fast. On the other hand, the man that gets wisdom is preserved.

To reject God and His wisdom is nothing short of rebellion. It is the thought and attitude that I know best and can best do for myself. It is a refusal to accept God for who He is and what He can do. Pride is the source of this rebellion and is the cause of many a fall.

“Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths. Be not wise in thine own eyes: fear the Lord, and depart from evil. It shall be health to thy navel, and marrow to thy bones. Honour the Lord with thy substance, and with the firstfruits of all thine increase: So shall thy barns be filled with plenty, and thy presses shall burst out with new wine.” (Proverbs 3:5-10).

Whether a man will admit it or not, God is in every heart:

“I will put my laws into their mind, and write them in their hearts: and I will be to them a God, and they shall be to me a people: And they shall not teach every man his neighbour, and every man his brother, saying, Know the Lord: for all shall know me, from the least to the greatest.” (Hebrews 8:10-11)

As a result, the man that rejects God and His wisdom rejects Him knowingly. This creates an inner conflict for he knows God to be true and to be real. Rejecting God is a conscious effort that will leave the man vexed and perplexed. This usually creates anger and resentment towards God for the man knows God is right. This anger helps to further pervert his way.

The only solution is to acknowledge God. Accept Him and His wisdom. Soon the way of the foolish man will straighten out and his course made clear. Foolishness is replaced with wisdom and understanding. Life is no longer hatred but love.
