Bible, Gospel and America. Is the Bible Belt, “collapsing”? Was there ever really a “moral majority”? Is the religious right a “prosperity Gospel”? These comments and more were made by the new head of the Southern Baptist Convention’s Ethics and Religious Liberty Commission, Dr. Russell Moore.
The Christian Broadcasting Network (CBN) interviewed Dr. Moore to get answers to these questions and to dig deeper into what he thinks America is today.
Is it the end of the Bible Belt?
CBN Announcer: “Dr. Moore, What do you mean that Christians are no longer the moral majority but are now the prophetic minority?”
Dr. Russell Moore: “Well, I mean we can no longer pretend that we are a moral majority. In this country, I think for a long time we assumed most people in America agreed with us on basic values and that we are simply adding the Gospels to those values. I think as we look around American society right now that it is very clear that a large number of Americans disagree with us about some very fundamental things.”
“I don’t think that’s anything to panic about or wring our hands about. I just think that’s the normal default position for Christianity in the world. And we need to recognize it and engage it as such.”
