“O bless our God, ye people, and make the voice of his praise to be heard: Which holdeth our soul in life, and suffereth not our feet to be moved” (Psalm 66:8-9)
We are to celebrate and adore our God. The word “bless” comes from the word “barak” which means to kneel down in submission to God. If not always in a physical sense this is the spiritual posture we should always take when having any dealings with the Lord.
But notice something very special. The Psalmist calls Him “our” God. This brings the point home that God is our Father and we are His children. Each of us is a brother and sister through the unifying blood of Jesus Christ.
We should cry out in Joy and be known when we praise God. Make a joyful noise! Sing! Hum! Let the spirit of joy, peace and love for God out and let people hear it! Our blessings from the Lord and our love towards Him are no secret. We need to stop acting as if it was!
Why should we be so “loud and proud” of our blessings? It is because God literally holds our soul, our very spirit in life. While the spirit is and always will be, the body is temporary and will pass away. It is God that holds and maintains our spirit and soul in life and will be our doings if our soul ever transitions over into death.
“If God has enabled us not only to keep our life, but our position, we are bound to give him double praise. Living and standing is the saint’s condition through divine grace. Immortal and immoveable are those whom God preserves. Satan is put to shame, for instead of being able to slay the saints, as he hoped, he is not even able to trip them up. God is able to make the weakest to stand fast, and he will do so” (Charles Spurgeon).
Holding our soul in life God also causes it so that we, “suffereth not our feet to be moved”. God gave us Jesus Christ, the truth, the life and the way. We have a way to follow so we will never stumble, our feet cannot be moved out of God’s way and into the snare of the devil as long as we follow Christ.
We have plenty of reason for getting down on our knees and praising God. Plenty of reason to praise him with so much affection that everyone around us hears us. God keeps us alive! God keeps us out of the grip of devil!
God Be Praised!
